(PRWEB) August 3, 2010... Five hundred years ago who knew the good citizens of Riga would start a tradition that has become so much more than just a holiday decoration? The Christmas tree is recognized worldwide as a symbol of hope, peace and brotherly love. This year marks the 500th anniversary of the first known decorated Christmas tree, which is said to have originated in Riga, Latvia in 1510 where it was displayed at a street carnival.

"The Christmas tree brings our families together and unites us in celebration," said Jami Warner, Executive Director of the American Christmas Tree Association. The Christmas tree is symbolic of an enduring tradition that is 500 years old and counting," she said.

"We wish the Christmas tree a very happy 500th birthday and hope that families everywhere will continue this lovely tradition by celebrating this Christmas with a beautiful Christmas tree." Warner said.
