‘Tis the Season, and with Good Reason! Studies Show Positive Mental Health Benefits Associated with Christmas Decorating

American Christmas Tree Association recommends consumers decorate for Christmas now for a positive boost heading into the holiday season

November 22, 2022 – U.S. consumers plan to decorate their homes for Christmas earlier this year. According to a Wakefield Research survey of 1,000 Americans, 79% of participants agreed that the earlier they decorate for Christmas, the more holiday spirit they experience. 55% of participants have already decorated before Thanksgiving.

“There is never a bad time to pull out Christmas decorations or set up your Christmas tree, but if consumers haven’t already begun, now is the time,” said Jami Warner, Executive Director of the American Christmas Tree Association (ACTA). “Studies show that there are mental health benefits related to decorating for Christmas before December. Even if it’s just getting the Christmas tree up in the living room or pulling out the ornaments, decorating for Christmas is shown to boost moods and ‘activate’ the holiday spirit.”

Psychologists state that decorating for the holidays well in advance creates a spike in dopamine and creates a neurological shift that can boost energy levels.

“Decorating now is a great way to add something special outside of the daily routine as we head into the holidays,” said Warner. “We are also seeing a return to a more nostalgic feeling in Christmas décor trends. Many consumers are leaning toward the classic Christmas look we all know and love. This season, reds, greens, blues, and golds will remain a staple in holiday décor.”

Research also shows that people who decorate for Christmas early are perceived as friendly and approachable. A positive sign for consumers who are looking to add their exterior Christmas decorations before December. The Journal of Environmental Psychology found that homes with Christmas decorations had more significant attributes of sociability.

“Last year, 94 million U.S. households displayed a Christmas tree. We can expect very similar demand for the 2022 season. Many people have decided to shop early for their trees, so why not get into the holiday spirit now and set it up early?” said Warner.
