2022 Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be a shortage of Christmas trees this year?

Consumer demand will remain high in 2022 despite the lack of tree variety. Retailers are responding to consumer demand by starting deals and promotions for winter holiday merchandise earlier in the year. While there may be enough trees for everyone who wants one, the options may be more limited. According to NRF’s latest consumer survey, 44% of holiday shoppers say it’s better to purchase seasonal items early because inflation will continue to impact prices later in the year. Another 31% think buying items early is best because the deals won’t get any better.

How will environmental factors impact tree supply this year?

Weather events such as drought and wildfires are expected to impact live Christmas tree crop yields this season. With growers facing tough challenges related to irrigation, elevated temperatures, and generally dry weather, consumers can expect to find fewer trees on farms or tree lots. Given the fuel cost for irrigation pumps and other inflation issues, some growers say customers could see more expensive trees this season.

When should consumers purchase a Christmas tree this season?

Consumers are encouraged to purchase trees early this season. Some larger retailers are selling their leftover 2021 artificial tree stock at a lower cost than trees ordered this year—this is a sign to consumers to shop early and secure their ideal tree at the right price. A consumer survey from Alix Partners shows that 39% of respondents plan to make at least half of their purchases on sale this year. Keeping affordability top of mind this season.

Will Christmas trees cost more this year than in the past?

While pricing may vary from retailer to retailer, consumers can expect live and artificial Christmas trees to cost a little more this year. For live trees, these price increases are mainly due to extreme weather events in regions throughout the U.S., so Christmas tree shoppers may find fewer trees on farms or tree lots. For artificial trees, with a newly implemented transportation law in California, there are concerns that Christmas trees may be held up out of the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Oakland, which will cause disruptions in getting Christmas trees to shelves and consumers.

What’s more affordable – a live Christmas tree or an artificial one?

Although more expensive upfront, there are longer-term cost savings associated with purchasing artificial Christmas trees. Artificial trees are used for an average of 10 years, but most are guaranteed for 20 years. If cared for properly, a good quality tree can be used year after year.

What are some décor trends that we expect to see in 2022?

Because the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the way we gather around the holidays, décor will lean into tradition and nostalgia. Traditional Christmas motifs will emote feelings of warmth and security, reflective of cherished family traditions. Green, red, and blue, along with silver and gold, will be popular. A big nod to the traditional vintage style.

Brown is predicted to be a new addition to the holiday pallet. Home Accents Today indicates that “Consumers are also very interested in sustainability. This is another reason for brown to be as prominent as it is and will be in future palettes.”
