It Only Takes a Tree to Switch on the Christmas Spirit: How Christmas Decorating Boosts Mental Health

With the arrival of fall, wet weather, and daylight savings bringing what feels like shorter days, it’s clear that Christmas is nearing and tugging at our minds. Some may be waiting for Thanksgiving to wrap up so they can quickly unpack the holiday décor but will only have a few short weeks to enjoy it. Instead of waiting until the turkey is done, consider bringing out the holiday decorations and showcasing your Christmas tree and décor early, as studies show there are endless benefits to decking the halls!

Oh, Christmas Tree!

Our 2023 Consumer Survey shows nearly 70% of consumers display their Christmas decorations before December. Setting up your Christmas tree truly heralds the start of the season! The twinkling lights, smells, and array of ornaments help awaken cherished Christmas memories. The sparkle and warmth of a cheerful tree can brighten even the gloomiest and chilliest winter day. Shopping for a tree can also be an exciting adventure - choosing the size, variety, light color, and type of tree. With all the thought that goes into it, you can stand back and be proud of your selection when you catch the first sight of the tree in your home!

Switch on the Christmas Lights – and Spirit!

Whether it is spending time decorating with nostalgic, timeless decorations or shopping for the perfect Christmas tree for your household, the joy and enthusiasm that this holiday season brings is the opportunity to enhance our mental health and overall well-being. Christmas trees – artificial, live, small, tall, you name it – are at the core of how we celebrate the Christmas season. In fact, 67% of consumers surveyed feel happier with a Christmas tree in their home. The sights of red, green, and gold lighting up the Christmas tree, combined with the smell of pine and gingerbread, are sure to lift spirits and unload the day's worries.

Festive Gatherings and Social Celebrations

Tis the season for cookie decorating, white elephant gifts, and ugly sweater parties! Participating in or planning these holiday festivities fosters a stronger sense of togetherness and builds connections with those around us. So go ahead and change your RSVP to 'Yes!' this holiday season and embrace the festive spirit with friends, family, neighbors, or colleagues! Planning a get-together? Use ACTA’s #HowToHoliday checklist to guide your holiday shopping needs between now and Christmas!

This time of year brings an opportunity to reflect, cherish life’s moments, and appreciate our friends, family, and others. So, as we draw closer to the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, consider bringing out the holly, the lights, and the tinsel sooner rather than later. Your mind—and your heart—will thank you for it!
